Has someone ever told you this "you need to do it for yourself"?... I was thinking today about some of the things, and the people in my life that have motivated me to make changes in my life.. Sure there is some truth to being self motivated, but hasn't there always been someone in our life, or something to make us motivated?..
....a mother making her kids do their homework to get good grades in school... a father pitching the ball to his son to make him a better ball player... A boss making his employees take training classes to make them do better at their jobs... a pastor motivating his congregation to be more Christlike... a friend/accountability partner asking the hard questions to help keep your thought life pure... maybe someone we're attracted to makes us want to lose weight or get a haircut.. lol well maybe not the haircut.. lol...
I guess we do need to be careful and not just be dependent on others to motivate us, but we do need to have people in our life that helps us to be motivated is a good thing to have... So maybe what we need to do, is ask the the Lord to send the people in our life to help motivate us to do the things we need to do for ourselves?..

Hi Rod, we have choices, we make them. There was a time in my life when I hung out with people who dragged me down because my self-esteem was low. When I came to my senses years' ago, my choices were first God, and then to befriend people who have similar interests. We can learn from people too, yes, I've had mentors of sorts, especially at church. And we can learn from others' mistakes; indeed, we can help them by sharing our experience of having been through a similar ordeal and born again. God bless!

Be a living example to someone in the area you need the most motivation?
Disciple someone, be a mentor, guide the next generation of Christ followers.
The harvest has been ready for a while?

. Continue to be faithful, deliverance is near, obedience must be seen, be an unconditional blessing as He continues to bless you.
This time is short, serve Him well, serving all.

When I first became a Christian 30 years ago I was an arrogant young man who always thought I knew everything. Inevitably I came into conflict with church leaders who cut me down to size.
Unfortunately this experience caused a "pendulum" reaction. I became totally lacking in all forms of self-confidence, and became reliant on others in the church motivating me. The result of this was a shedding of responsibility for my own Christian growth which over the years proved disastrous.
It is only in the last few years that I have come to realise that the things God has put into me are worth just as much as the things he has put into anyone else, and I have no reason to feel inferior or to wait for the approval of others before I act. I am only now recovering the motivation that I had in abundance when I first became a Christian but allowed others to squeeze out of me.
Ultimately I believe it is a question of balance: we need to encourage one another along the road but in the final analysis we MUST obtain our motivation from the Holy Spirit - so it's not so much a case of self-motivation but God-in-self-motivation. From personal experience I would say that any other approach will be the wrong one.

I've found that I can be motivated by others, but any lasting change comes about because I truly want to change "for myself" and because the Lord is leading me to change. But I certainly have been inspired to start the journey due to other people's influence. I think (kind of like Peter is saying above me there) that God puts people in our path who can be used to kick start us, then it's up to us from there. The reawakening of my desire to really serve the Lord and totally follow his will was in my heart, but really brought to life due to a friend who was an amazing example in that area. Another friend inspired me to "do the work" of healing from past experiences that were still hindering me. Ultimately I think we have to be ready, and self-motivated enough to embrace change and growth with or without the influence of others.

There must be a difference between a secular counselor and a spiritual one! The world's expert would insist on teaching to repair one's own erroneous zones; a spiritual "true" pastor wouldn't just say to try to be Christ-like. No one can be Christ-like by oneself without His truly help! Many might be motivated as to behave godly, but still they miss the burning of the Spirit, the Comforter residing IN them, the only one that can make us glorify Jesus in God's real blessing! He doesn't want us to "think", he just wants us to 'listen with our hearts", make us new and let us continuously grow in His surrounding embracing, both IN and OUT!
The Holy Spirit will indeed influence our thoughts, feelings and emotions, but He is not a cognitive/intellectual dimension we can ever perceive and comprehend by reasoning! (Ref. to Acts and how people got baptized by the Spirit!) [Field number 777]

WOW... lol .. I guess I didn't do a good job of explaining what I meant in this post... lol
I agree that we all need the power of the Holy Spirit in our life...
.. I shared with a friend the other day about something I wanted to change in my life, because of ?????????.. and their comment back to me was "you have to do it for yourself not for them!"... my thought was, don't we need someone to help motivate us to change?... sure we need to want to make change ourself!.. but someone, or something pushing us to make the change can help motivate us...

Allan, its good to hear how people here have motivated you.. I think that it is our responsibility as Christian's to encourage and motivate each other.. We all have the same goal.. Right?... |

I pray often that the Lord will send me just such a person. The journey is so much brighter with a friend along, a friend on whom we can depend to "tell it like it is," and in turn trust us to do the same. There are many here who are encouraging, but having someone tangible makes a great difference. Having someone to help motivate us isn't necessarily a bad thing, but in the end we have to want the change for ourselves and for God. Making changes to please someone else will often backfire, resulting in a strained relationship...."But I did this for you!" This puts pressure on the other person to accept the results of the change whether they appreciate it or not. Then you have another set of problems! And round and round she goes! Better to do it for yourself, but have a friend to whom you are accountable. Bless you, Rod. Joy

Iron sharpens Iron....
I believe God puts people in our life's for this very reason, to help us walk it out. Real friends tell it like it is. Yes Yonder you have to do it for yourself. You have to take you with you ware ever you go.
Praise God in all things Jenn

I think you are right about getting that much needed motivation from God but we can also be inspired by His children. Inspiration can help give us the emotional mindset but maybe the motivation actually gives us the strength to move on it. His strength! And don't we all need that when we are trying to change something a bit more difficult than our socks?

I heartily concur...I try harder for others than I do for just myself....maybe that is a huge fault I have, I don't know....But I will do things I don't like for the sake of someone else (if I love them and they need it), but for just me...not so much. Maybe its bein "other motivated" and not "self motivated"???

I believe as we get closer to God and he heals, renews and inspires us, in certain areas having someone who helps motivate you in that particular area is actually Gods doing! What a blessing to have someone support you thru changes! Someone who uplifts, encourages and prays with you or for you!
