Obama in the Childrens's Bookstore
heartforedjehu 11/11/2008 7:36 am
While browsing in Barnes and Noble children's section, amongst Dr. Suess, the beautifully illustrated Christmas books of the season and a myriad of other lovely picture books there was a book with Barack Obama on it. Being curious, I went to the B&N website and found no less than 18 books about
Obama. All these came up when the category given was "children".
Hmmmmmmm

When a racial minority has almost no one to look up to, they have of recent history been frequently written about for their own culture/race to read and become encouraged by.
So this is nothing new.
I don't blame them.

I agree remove the polictical differences and what you are left with is a black man being elected for the very first time to the highest office of the land in the most powerful country in the world. It was not that long ago and was in my lifetime as a child that I saw so much hatred and predudice towards black americans where they weren't even allowed to sit anywhere other than the back of the bus, drink from "white public water fountains", go to "white colleges" eat in "white dinners" on and on it goes! I didn't want Obama as president as you prolly know but now he is and we'll hope and pray for him to do what is right in the best interests of this country and in God's eyes. Minoritys, women, and all Americans have much to be thankful for in that the "old white guy for president" only mentality has finaly been broken and will never ever be an excuslive club again in this great land of ours! Who knows maybe our next president after Mr. Obama will be a woman? Maybe even a black woman? Any and everyone has the chanch now to go as far as they've ever dreamed in public service or persoanal ambition.

Hi Greg,
Yes, you make a valid point. In my studies this morning I noted and bookmarked an article by Bruce Handy explaining such as you have stated here.

I think it’s fair to say that no modern American politician, not even Ronald Reagan, has entered the arena with as much symbolic, even messianic, baggage as Obama has. Some is the byproduct of his historic role, some the product of his own oratorical manufacture, and some has been projected on him, vaporous and inchoate, as if he were a big-eared, smartly dressed healing crystal. When you distill all that into something suitable for children, well, the results can be judged by their covers. “Barack,” a picture book written by Jonah Winter and illustrated by AG Ford, depicts Obama looking off into the distance — at the future? The promised land? Another town hall meeting in Scranton? — against a backdrop of blue sky and a suggestion of heavenly clouds. “Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope,” another picture book, written by Nikki Grimes and illustrated by Bryan Collier, features a ghostly adult version of the candidate looming behind his boyhood self, the elder Obama’s hands raised in a preacher’s gesture, light beams emanating from the horizon to suggest we’re at a more churchly incarnation of a Hollywood premiere. Upping the ante, “Yes We Can,” the chapter book, backdrops our hero with a suggestion of both heavenly clouds and light beams — the full Botticelli.

I don't think the doors will ever be open for certain people to run for public office again, yet that is a mute point. Namely-Sarah.
Many blessings Greg.

Hi Clay! Good to see you, as usual. There is much emotionalism tied up with this campaign, many firsts and there is bound to be a "fairy-tale quality" to the new world hero. God Bless you for stopping by.

Thank you it's good to see we have something in common. Listen I think it was you I offended on Sweethoney's post, and I know I did by my remark about being a liberal and not a christian or something to that effect. First let me appoligse for making such a false judgemental comment to you and I do hope you'll except it because it is heartfelt and I was totaly wrong in not only saying such a thing but to try and be God in knowing anyones heart before Him! I have been very prideful and so full of myself in so many ways more than I like to think about thats for sure. What this whole past election has brought to my mind and taught me is that God isn't human and He's certainly not Republican or Democract and even though it is good for us as U.S. citizens to take part in the policital process we mustn't let it be our main passion or love in life that's always been and always will be reserved for the Lord alone and in the end of all things He is the one utlitmately lifing up and taking down not only the leaders but nations of the world themselves. Doesn't mean we shouldn't be concern or take part in the policitcal process in voicing our dissent through it or in our freedom of speach but we should always keep in mind what I just said above so when things don't go as we might have hoped, as they will, we can still have peace in our hearts to just who really is in controll of all things.
Again I hope you will forgive my past remark to you and I'm sure as far as I can teel that we won't see many things eye to eye but this world isn't our true home and in Jesus we have so much more in common than we often give ourselves credit for. Discussion yes! Debate yes! Differences yes! Division in the body no not ever!

Hello MerlinHawk,
Have not seen you around for awhile, or perhaps I have just not been around too much. Anyway, you are correct, he is the new role-model. Why so much in children's section had me wondering until I did a little research and the answer to that question, besides what you said is "Picture book politics."

Oh I see what point you are trying to make Rhonda and thats a bit disturbing to me also! I was looking at the race barrier finaly being broken for all Americans but to make or hint at any man/woman being more than just that is very dangerous and that is exactly what the world will say and think when the anti christ finaly is allowed by God to come to the world's scene and the unbeliving world will follow him into it's worse nightmare ever since the begining of time. I'm afraid you might be right about Sarah Pelin as we've all seen on the T.V. in tying to mock her and her belives huh?

Hi Rhonda,

How is Ed? You know, I've always been creeped out by Dr. Seuss illustrations especially as a kid. Regarding Obama, I take heart by the encouragement that I'm seeing in disaffected youth.

Kris.

I appreciate your concern, but I realize the passion with which we all pursue our faith. While there is, as you correctly point out, commonality, we sometimes lose the commonality in the details. I also appreciate you apology, but feel it unnecessary in light of the vigor with which you attend to your faith. Unlike some, I don't see Liberal as name calling, but rather a compliment. Despite the fact I consider myself as more Centrist, I like the idea of being able to change my mind when the circumstances call for it. Being "locked" into a single, unchangeable position is, in my view, quite confining.

Thank you again, and Godspeed.......

It's a bit of both...heh.

Regarding your research, yes it's what I said and your correct observation of "Picture book politics".

If it weren't also politics, they'd only make these books either after he dies or after he leaves politics.
So you're correct there.

Hi Kris,
Thanks for asking about Ed. He is well. Yes, the youth are very disaffected, but the void is only an opportunity for those with little scruples to step in and gain advantage. Obamas stand on abortion is not so kid friendly. In any case, he's in. I will pray for him, but my child is not even slightly impressed. Then again, she has a hero and his name is Jesus. Hope this dosen't make you mad. If you feel ok with Obama- well, so does most of America and the rest of the world. So, that's the way it goes.

Hi Pene,
I know we are not supposed to go by feelings, but when we are walking with the Lord and listening carefully, it is discernment. Sometimes tricky to tell the two apart but I know you my friend, and I know you have discernment. I have seen it in action! Just more reason to hang on tight to Jesus. Love you lots, Pene.

Hello my friend,
So glad you stopped by with this info. It is alarming that they sing songs of praise to him! Now, youth have always praised -in a sense their teen idols and that is bad too, but at least these idols had no real power. This smacks of another scary time in history. Interestingly enough, during the election campaign, I know O would win, and I didn't read much about him or really think about it very much? Don't ask me why. Now, I have an interest to see where were headed so I can be ready mentally and spiritually. God Bless you richly. I would like to see this that you mentioned. Utube?
