Our Authority in Christ

Christ gave us authority over all diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits. How awesome! That is so exciting to me, to think that He gave us the power to set people free in His name.

There is one word of caution that needs to be spoken concerning our authority, though, that many people don't like to hear. People love to hear that they have power and authority. What they don't want to hear about our authority in Christ, though, is that we are only to use that authority when and how the Lord tells us to.

Jesus said when He was here that He only did what He saw the Father doing. He did not do anything by His own will. To do so would have been sin. It is also sin for us to do so. If we go around casting out demons and healing without the Lord telling us when and how to do so, we will be sinning. The Word tells us in Romans 12 to present our bodies as living sacrifices, and I believe that includes not using our authority unless He gives us permission to do so.

It is like a personal accountant. He is given authority to write checks for his employer, correct? What would happen if he just wrote checks whenever and for whatever he wanted to? Just because there is money in the checking account and checks in the checkbook doesn't mean that he has the right to write as many checks as he wants, right? It is the same way with our authority in Christ. We have an account that never runs out of money. We have an endless supply of checks. However, the resources in that account do not belong to us really. They belong to the Lord. We are only His representatives here. We are to be in complete submission to Him in everything we do, even the good things like healing people and casting forth demons.

Just my thoughts...

I welcome your thoughts on this idea.

Be blessed!

Well OK- I have some thoughts.
The pride thing is the sinning part and being puffed up in doing so.

Sometimes we don't know what we are doing sometimes. Yes it's true we have to wait on the anointing to heal and deliver, however the new christians, and I remember when, have such a zeal and love for hurting people that they want to play Holy Ghost Jr. and fix all their problems.

It requires alot of training and wisdom from the Lord in order to do these things, actually it's him doing it through us. And that comes with time and alot of prayer, if indeed it is your ministry and calling.

Also the bible says somewhere not to lay hands on someone suddenly....paraphrasing, it'll backfire on you.

I did that one time because well I was a new baby and I wanted that stinkin' demon gone. Well the person I was attempting to free(lol) didn't ask for it or knew what the heck was going on, as a matter of fact not even christian. Well I proceeded to slap this persons forehead (remembering this makes me laugh) and I tell you what that spirit clung on to my hand like gum being pulled from your mouth, and it wouldn't let go. I finally shook it off though- but that's what I mean by it backfiring on you.

This is a good post I'm remembering things from early on and it's stirring me up.

I believe God allowed me to do that at the time to teach me some things. It taught me, actually it freaked me out. Ever since then I have had plenty of practice and teaching from the Lord directly. And I tell you what that's nothing to mess with, especially deliverance, if you don't know what you are doing.

And to support your post doing or "thinking" you can do it in your own power without the Lord's guidance is dangerous business.

Thank you

Amen Jean- We are the vessels that the Lord works through. But, it is not our work or about us. If HE is lifted up He will draw all men unto Himself. Thanks for posting.

As always, you post some really good stuff, Jean. Thanks. (smile)

Fireball, I enjoyed reading your testimony. I think we all can probably say we did some pretty dumb stuff when we were young in the Lord. However, I think just like with little kids, our Heavenly Father sees our hearts and covers us....a LOT! LOL!

But you're right, messing around with devils and deliverance and such without knowing what you're getting into can get you into BIG trouble.

Elizabeth, the scripture you quoted reminds me of Brother Jimmy Draper. He was the President of the Southern Baptist Convention for awhile and my pastor when I attended the First Baptist Church of Euless, Texas (1979 to 1981).

Surely, you know how conservative that congregation was (and most likely still is, regardless of who the pastor is now). I'm not lying when I tell you that from the pulpit, when Brother Jimmy was preaching on this text, he said to all 600-800 of us in attendance that night,"Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who the hell are you?" And we all almost fell out of our seats. I still break out in a huge grin everytime I see that scripture because it was so...well...let's just say it was beyond what most people sitting in that congregation would have found acceptable. But he sure got his point across. And for that reason, I have never forgotten the emphasis and the warning that he was leaving on us NOT to mess around with stuff that could ultimately end in our own demise.

Oh, and since I'm on such a roll here (LOL!), just thought I'd say that the scripture you mentioned, Fireball, about not laying hands on someone suddenly was actually in a different context or application--although, of course, judgment and discernment needs to be exercised anytime you lay hands on ANYONE for ANY REASON. But that particular scripture has to do with not setting a young or unproven believer into an office (e.g. deacon, bishop) by the laying on of hands too soon. I believe I'm correct on that. Jean (or someone), please correct me if I'm wrong as I don't know where the scripture is right off hand.

Back to your original post...

I went through many years of the Lord showing me things regarding balance and following the leadership of the Holy Spirit, and as you have said here, Jean, Jesus is our example. How did He please the Father in everything He did? He only did what He saw the Father doing.

I posted something by Frances Frangipane that talks along these lines, too, not too long ago. Walking in Eternal Life

As far as I'm concerned, there is only ONE way to get the God kind of results we're all looking for, whether it be in our own personal lives or in our ministry to others: Do it BY the leading of the Holy Spirit. I don't know about anyone else here, but for me, without Him prompting and leading and guiding me, I'm a pitiful mess! I'll screw up in a heartbeat without His help. And the day I learned I can't do ANYTHING on my own was the day my life changed in dramatic fashion.

One of my most favorite verses is the last part of Jeremiah 10:23 and the first part of verse 24 which says (from the Amplified Bible), "It is not in man, even in a strong man and a man at his best, to direct his own steps. O Lord, correct, instruct and chastise me, but with judgment..."

In other words, I like to say it this way: I'm not smart enough to run my own life, let alone be let loose with His power and authority or anything else He gives me to try to help someone else! I have such a heart to see people set free from sickness, disease, poverty, mental and emotional bondages, and sins of every kind (pride, prejudice, judgmentalism, legalism, etc.). But I can't help not ONE person by my measly attempts.

I can, however, position myself with my faith and say, "Lord, teach me. Do in this earth through me all You desire to do, and don't let me get in Your way. It's all up to You anyway. I'm just your vessel. Help me to be that."

Sorry this is kinda long...but I've had an amazing day. On the way to church this morning (it's an hour and 45 minute one-way drive so I have lots of time to fellowship with the Lord), I got real quiet and simply asked Him, "Lord, is there anything on Your heart You'd like to tell me?" Sadly, I have to confess taht I haven't done that a lot.

It didn't take Him long to respond. About two minutes later, He impressed this so clearly into my spirit. He said, "I long for My people to have so much more than they know. I want them to walk in health and live above their present circumstances. But they can't unless they do it by faith, and most don't know that. They think it's Me holding out on them, but I'm not holding out on them. I want them to have SO much more."

As He spoke that to me, I began to cry. Messed up my makeup BIGTIME! LOL!

I'm so grateful for the Word of Faith that has been preached to me and that I have walked in for a number of years--not that I don't have SO much more to learn and to have developed in my life, of course. But it has made ALL the difference in my life. I'm SO grateful!

Again...sorry for the length of this. Probably better end this and go respond to some comments on my own blog for a change! LOL!

By the way, Jean, I'm starting a new series on my blog. Check it out when you get a chance. Blessings!

OK-WO-that scripture is 1Tim 5:22
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.

Rules of conduct from Paul to Timothy.

I see where you see it like that. Can be friendly or hostile.
Actually at that time I took the, suddenly ,literally
I just see it differently- but it's all good!!

Hi Jean,

That is a really good thought about healing and authority. I, like many others, have wondered why, when we have been given the power and feel "anointed", healing does not occur. It is not ours to give, we are but representatives. Thanks for making that plain.
