Do you think it is okay to use bad language as a Christian? I think that it grieves the Holy Spirit when we do, but so many Christians do that I am confused. What do you think? Which words are okay and which ones aren't? I am not trying to be ignorant here. I really want to know. Any opinions would be very welcome. Thanks!
All off-colored language is off limits for Christians.
God isn't particularly concerned about the words we use.
Some are permitted and some aren't. (Please explain)

Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace to those who hear it.

I think that for the most part a Christian shouldn't use bad language..

I knew a man that had the mouth of a trucker (come to think of it he was a trucker.. lol).. anyways there was no doubt in my mind that he was a godly man.. he had (I say had because he has gone to be with the Lord) a true love for the Lord.. and when you would talk with him he was not ashamed to speak about the things of the Lord.. I couldn't understand how someone that was saved could use swear words like he did.. and then I understood that there were people that he could touch for Christ because of his personality that your regular church person (someone that doesn't swear) would never be able to reach...

I don't know if that really answers your question.. but it did give me peace about the way he was.. and I excepted him as a brother in Christ and I know that I will see him again in the Kingdom of Heaven

I voted no bad language. It makes me uncomfortable to do it, so I don't. I also don't want to be a stumbling block to anyone who hears me talk. I guess, not only in the words I use, but how I use them.

Jesus said that is what comes out of a man's mouth that defiles him, because it issues from his soul, who he really is. But as willgod quotes, it also includes ,"worthless talk". I've even heard that Christians shouldn't use "darn" or "shoot" or "heck" because the feeling behind them are the same as those we substitute them for. They were termed "Christian Swear Words" This is another time I am grateful that God is Judge, and not me. Like the song says, "God is God and I am not."

Sometimes there are still things that as a christian we should not be doing...but the Holy Spirit will convict and cleanse in due time...provided we are obedient to His leading too...

I don't think the Lord will overcrowd us with all our shortcomings that we are bogged down under the weight of it and feels condemned because of that..
He will deal with matters in our life bit by bit or step by step...to help us be more christlike and mature in Him...

But if we say we are His and indulge in foul language (in this case) with no hesitation or consciousness of its foulness...then the FRUIT shows...if it lingers on with no improvement...then the question arises... is he abiding in the Lord or is God even Lord in his life...(in this particular area) etc..
BUT who are we are to judge...only the Lord knows the ultimate intentions of the heart...and indeed by His grace we move on always!

Take the time to read what I have posted on this before: Profanity and The Tongue On Fire. Our mouths should not have both blessings and cursings coming out of them. We should not be both sweet and bitter.

I agree with my buddy here. I have been able to reach folks for Christ by talking there language and fitting in to the point where they feel comfortable with me. It is the intent behind the language that is important.

Jean, sometimes I use it for a specific reason.

I've never learned how to say "oh, sugar" when I smash my thumb with a hammer. The words that DO come out escape before I can stop them, believe me.

Sometimes I use it for an intended result. Especially in my thread to LS....

You don't see me talk like that elsewhere, however.

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
as far as i am concern would speaking filth mean you will go to hell... no,... but it sure make it seem like you've been there

I said All off-colored language is off limits for Christians because, as christians we are supposed to represent Christ. And it is not like christ to swear.
No i'm not perfect, i do slip up. But am trying hard not to. The bible says not to swear, so i think that it's written pretty clear.
Swearing from the mouth of anyone does not sound nice.

I used to have a potty mouth, but have cleaned it up. Still I am only human and a sinner and they still sometimes escape from my mouth. I have gotten a lot better over the years thanks to the Lord who has helped me with this.

Bad is bad, as sin is a sin , no matter how big and small it is. As a Christian, we all go through certain levels in our maturity. We all started as BABIES in the Lord. And from that stage, many times we fall and make mistakes. But as we keep nourishing our spiritual bodies by the Words of God, we come to maturity and more understanding about God. Little by little, we experience changes. Lots of Christians in this site. Perhaps some are not matured enough yet, BUT God still working on them, as He is still working on me.

I find that far too often professing Christians are just as guilty of using profane language; as those who do not know the Lord. Even when their words appear to be innocent. Words like........ darn....... dog-gone-it........ shucks....... poof....... ; are all substitute words for those other vile words or expressions, which are used by some. The point is; that if you are using the substitute words; you might as well use the other four letter word; because there is really no difference. So when trying to hammer a nail into the wall, and you miss the nail, and hit your thumb instead, don't think you've pleased God by using OH, SHUCKS! or OH, CRAP!; instead of OH SHIT! ........................... LET'S BE REAL !

No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 1 Cor. 2: 7

I think everyone on here makes good points. I think it is a thing of spiritual maturity tho. God calls each person to lay down different things at different times.

In Romans 12 I think it talks about meeting people where they're at, not perplexing them with scripture and complex discussions and such.

I do get offended a little with people that I know have been convicted and picked it up again. But I'm not anyone else's Jimminy Cricket or the Holy Spirit to make the call when they should get convicted about their speech.

BTW, sometimes, when frustrated, I just say "Oh, dirty word!!"

It depends on the situation. If you need to vent some steam, then yes, any other situation, no.

The bible even has "off colored language" in it! Did you know that in the culture that the bible was written in, the word "dung" ( that some of the bibles authors used)was the exact word we use.....sh** That gives a whole new meaning for the bible, no ?

I feel the word MOTIVE needs to be mentioned here... It is not what goes into a man that makes him unclean, but what proceeds from him.

Jesus always ups the anti when showing us our defiled condition: Lust = Adultery / Hate = Murder, etc... etc...

Our motive and voice inflection can make ANY word obscene...

I think the bible is straightforward on this one and if you try to save someone through your own unglorifying and unedifying speech then things will eventually backfire..I have seen this happen on occasions

Hi, Miss Married Jean!

If it comes from the mouth, it is in the heart. Jesus drove the Pharisees to madness by pointing out their superficial religiosity. He knew their hearts!

If it is coming from our mouths, are we what we profess? What are we filling our hearts with? Are we walking that hypocritical line between Sunday and the rest of the week?

Bad words hurt my ears. We are instructed to by the Bible not to curse and swear. I'm not sure of the verse but it goes something like this. With the tongue bless we God even the Father and therewith curse we men, which were made out of the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceeds blessings and cursing. My brethern these things ought not so to be. One of those verses that I memorized years ago that never left my memory.

First of all confusion doesn't come from God. The first instinct you have from your heart is His answer.
Foul language does grieve the Holy Spirit!
Also, what a person thinks is who they are in their heart.
Be careful, God does love and forgive the instant you ask. Jesus also said to go and sin no more.
I'd love to say I am perfect, but perfect takes practice and practice makes perfect is what I tell my daughter's everyday!
Hang in there your not alone.

Dear Really,

Great post. eyeopener I think. Yes, I do strongly agree that all vulgar, coarse, profane language is unacceptablein
Gods eyes and in "polite" society. However I still fall in to the trap of it sometimes knowingly.. I know that it Grieves the Holy Spirit. I feel it in me.. twisting around. I confess it to God and He forgives but still I struggle with it daily. Please pray for me.

Thanks again for this provocative post.

What are all of your thoughts on my 1st post of the fact that the word "dung" that is used in the bible was the same as us saying the word sh** today? How come that culture found it appropriate to use it in the bible, and God never stoped it from happening?

Isa54

6/2/2006 6:59 pm

There are a lot of words that mean the same thing as dung, such as manure, droppings, cow-pies, etc. However I don't know of any scriptures in the Old or New Testaments that use the phrase, "Oh DUNG, I just smashed my finger!"

Issa54:

Actually in the culture that the bible was written, the word dung meant just that! This is the problem with interpreting the bible in different cultures! The original meaning gets mixed up, and mis-interpreted!

This is why it is important for Christians in Western American culture to study history!

Well now, I checked my Strongs and every reference made to dung that I looked up appears to be describing excrement, and is interchangeable with "waste" and "refuse" in different translations. When taken in context, it still seems to be used more as a description rather than a curse word as the word sh** is used today. Dung was connected to a curse at times like in Jeremiah, maybe that is why sh** is used as a curse word today. Thanks for making me look. I guess even looking up bad words is a good reason to get in the Word.

My pastor point out that the word dung meant just that, and that there are even more words in the bible that are used as "curse words". Again, we just dont know it becasue of the difference in culture!

It gives a whole new meaning tho the bible, no ?
