It is the beginning of a new year and tithing always seems to be on the lips of ministers at this time of year. I guess they want to see if we will make it a new year's resolution to give more money. I don't believe in tithing, though. I don't find it anywhere in the new testament. I also don't believe in it because I believe that God calls us to a higher calling in everything in the new covenant. As it says in Matthew, chapter 5, "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell." And further down in the chapter, "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." So, what is our measuring stick to be now for giving unto the Lord. I believe that we don't give at all. Now before I am stoned for heresy, hear me out. I believe that everything we own belongs to God, our bodies, our material possessions, our time, our very lives and our money. So, it is not a matter of how much money we give away. It is a matter of what the Lord allows us to keep. Believe me, if we all looked at it that way, we would be giving a lot more than 10%! Maybe that is why we tend to just want to limit ourselves with tithing? We don't want to give too much. Just a thought. As for me, I want to make everything I am and everything I am at God's disposal. That is my reasonable act of worship, as far as I am concerned. What about you? |

If I tithe 10%, do I trust God to make the remaining 90% cover 100% of my expenses? If I can not trust Him in this, do I have any trust?

I gotta say, I do believe in tithing. Whether it be in money, time, effort, or kind words. I think 10 percent is a good start, and all above that I consider "giving". I don't always believe, though, that tithes should go to the church that I attend. I believe that God would want his money spent wisely, and therefore I like to give to whichever Christian organization is doing the most for His Kingdom. Whether that be Joyce Meyer this month, a local church that does more for the homeless than ours does, my home church, or a ministering family that passes through our town. I know that God appreciates and blesses those who tithe, as I've seen it with my very eyes, though I do wonder if we get a bit legalistic about it sometimes. I believe the whole point of it is to give back what God has blessed us with, without jealousy and without complaining. And personally, I think that time and energy spent using the talents He has given us for His glory, are also tithes and offerings. I mean, I don't think that someone is going to Hell for not tithing, but I do believe that you will be richly blessed by using the talents and money He has given you wisely, and I'm quite positive that means giving what you can to the church (or some form of it). Interesting point of view, thanks for sharing, and be Blessed!

So seeing as how God wants our firstfruits- you are telling me that EVERYDAY you get up, pray for 2.4 hours, read your bible for 2.4 hours, give 10% to the person/ministry that has taught you new spiritual truths, fast for the first 3 days of each month (Which, yes, I do do!), etc? Malachi 3:10 - Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. A storehouse is a place where you get fed. If someone teaches you something new and you have spiritually grown from what that person says- You owe that person/ministry your tithe. It all has to do with sowing and reaping. Give nothing- get nothing. Sow the right amount into the right soil at the right time- and you will reap and reap multiplied from what you sowed. It is a law of nature. It is a law of God. God is a God of multiplication. It has to do with the correct attitude. Do you do it with a bad attitude or do you do it willingly? The Lord loveth a cheerful giver. It has to do with the leading of the Holy Spirit-- did you give the amount He told you to, to the place He told you to, WHEN He told you to? Obedience. Man/churches (which all started with King George II As quoted in the verse above, If you are not getting fed at your church, you are going against God's word as to where you are to give. When you sow the right seed in the wrong place, the harvest will be wrong/not continue. Matthew 13: 3. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4. And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5. Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6. And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8. But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Matthew 25:14. For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. 15. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. 16. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. 17. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. 18. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. 19. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. 20. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. 21. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 22. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. 23. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 24. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: 25. And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. 26. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: 27. Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. 28. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. 29. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. 30. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

I in no way meant to say that we shouldn't give at least 10% of our money to God. That is a good starting point. I meant that so many of us think that that is all we need to give, because of the old testament, and that we can spend the rest as we see fit. In light of the new testament, though, I don't think that is true. I believe everything we own and are belongs to God to use as He sees fit. What He allows us to use for our own purposes here is the issue, I believe, not how much we should give Him. I don't believe that we should see it as giving to Him but as asking Him how much He wants us to keep.

Boy when I read this post I thought 'You go ahead sister!' Not many people have the courage to talk about how they feel about tithing. It is a touchy subject. I remember one day at church, a missionary was visiting the church I attended. The missionary was getting ready to tell people the 3 things God requires from Christians. Before the man could say what number 1 was one woman said 'You know one of them is tithing'. Everyone sitting around us wispered many yes's. The woman said I get so tired of hearing the same old same old message. I thought 'Lord what is it about tithing that gets people so rattled. I could literally see people clutching their pocket books and me included when the call comes up for Gods people to give. I agree with you 'Peace of Love' as well as alot of things you said 'The1Firecracker'. I have had to learn what giving is from the Holy Spirit. I really don't think there is any other way to learn. When I first became a Christ I did as I was instructed to do accord to what the church taught about giving. I was glad to give. I was just eatting up the word and the sermons. Never even cross my mind where the money was going. I was on fire for Jesus! I have become wiser and older and when the Holy Spirit open my eyes and understand about God's point of view on giving I started giving in a new way. Miracles happen when the Lord gets a hold of your heart, mind, and pocket book. Blessings ArtisticLady
