Now I don't know what year of build your computer is or any of the technical information.
But malware from the Internet that installs on your pc as small programs gossiping information back to information brokers about what you do and what you like is a common problem. All these small gossiping programs slow your computer down.

There are several serious Anti Malware programs - some for free.
I have cleansed several computers for friends and foes, finding 300 or more malware items.

Pre-installed anti virus programs are mostly not the best - or free - ones. Norton and McAfee are found as pre-installation on many computers e.g Toshiba. They are well known and used by many, but ranking low on efficiency and protection.
So I for my part would prefer to uninstal pre-installations and install a high ranking - free? - anti virus program.

Besides that I don't know so much of computers. But I think e.g Restless know quite a lot and she is worth listening to.

Blessings

First I'd check why it's slow. Is your hard drive too full? Get a portable hardrive or an outboard one and download a lot of stuff onto it and see how your computer runs first. You need about 10% free space I was told or else it will slow down.

I have an old second hand laptop, only 4G of ram and a 2G processor and it works fantastic. It's very fast. I'm very happy with it.

Also where is it slow? Only online? If so that could be your provider and not your computer. These are things I'd check before spending any money.

If you go for a new one and it has Windows 8 on it, you can download "Classic Shell" That will give you the option of making Windows 8 look a lot more like Windows 7 and makes it more keyboard and mouse friendly.

I prefer PC over Apple, but that's just me, new ones are cheeper like you say plus you can add upgrades easily if you want to, like extra RAM, add another hard drive etc.

Hope this helps a bit.

Judgement Day will be interesting.

Oh, and Morgans is correct, there are a lot of programs that can slow you down.

I had Avast, a very good anti virus, but it also slowed my computer down a lot as it works all the time behind the scenes. I dont know your anti virus, but if you computer works better when it's turned off (dont do that too long) but it's a good thing to check also, then at least you know what you are fighting.

Judgement Day will be interesting.

the 4G I should have written 4 Gig same for 2 Gig.... or should I use the full word gigabyte? Just in case Gig means something else also? Just pullin' ya leg.

Never run two anti virus programs at your pc at the same time.
Kaspersky is supposed to be a better program than Avast. Especially if Avast is the free version.

For anti-malware I use two different programs: SpywareBlaster for immunization and SpyBot Search & Destroy for immunisation and to search for and repair.
SpyBot is a little complicated and you need to know what you are doing.
Both are free to use, and in free version you have to remember yourself to update and immunise.
They are not perfect but do a good job.

Some anti malware programs comes up with a lot of findings, but they promote themselves by showing false positives.

Besides that I use a paid version of an anti virus program at the best part of the Top-10.

That I think, was quite a compliment. Thanks!

The work of a sheepdog is to keep the sheep gathered and make sure they don't go where they get hurt or in danger. Besides that - as you wrote - to keep the wolves away and attack/defend against the wolves when they attack.

Sheep can make a habit of always wanting to go astray, and that can eventually get annoying. An annoyed sheepdog might sometimes end up behaving like a wolf. Then it's difficult to distinguish between the wolf and the sheepdog.
Sometimes we need to let people walk all the way so they learn by themselves it's no good. Coz you can't force anyone to believe anything. God knows that.
- But we can still keep an eye on them.

- Recently I got a haircut for not looking like an Old English Sheepdog.
Now I just look Old.

Blessings and thanks.

There's one other thing you can do. You can try running Linux Mate operating system on your computer and see if that helps. It's free and easy to use. It looks a bit like a cross between XP and some older operating systems. Amongst other things you get with it Libre Office (free) which is similar to Microsoft Office and can read Microsoft docs. You can also download Libre Office (free) and run it with Windows as well. Just it and you will see sites showing you what it is, even U toob has info on it. See before you try.

If you want to try Linux Mate, you have to first download a program called Unibootin, pick the Linux Download when you've found the site.

Then right click on "My Computer" Or "Computer" to see if you have a 32 or 64 bit system.

Next go on the net and look up Linux Mate, download either the 32 or 64 bit one (whatever your computer is) and then go to your bios. To get to your bios you just hit F2 on start up, configure your start up preferences 1 - USB, 2 - CD/DVD, 3 Hard Drive.

The reason for this is so you can put your Linux operating system onto your USB. Plug your USB in and you boot LInux. Leave out your USB and it will just boot Windows normally.

Why do I do this? I have another free operating system on my computer with many great features that I wont go into here. Also if I get a virus in Windows I can shut the computer down, put in the USB and retrieve anyting that I want that is not backed up using Linux. But make sure if you ever do that because of a virus that you scan your USB for viruses in another computer before opening it up .... but I digress ...

Then you click the Unibootin program, direct it to your 32 or 64 bit download and then to your USB and you have your new operating system. It's pretty user friendly and follow the bouncing ball kind of stuff.

Just a note:
Now as you have 2 operating systems, you will have "My Documents" etc in Linux, and your other ones in the Windows system. It took me a while to find my stuff in the Windows system but it's there if you need to find it. When you find it write down the pathway to it and all's good. I just forgot it and I'm not going to shut down reboot ect at the moment for now and write it out. Otherwise I'll never finish this post.

Hope I havent confused you. If you buy a new computer you can mess and experiment with Linux on your old one if you are adventurous.

Judgement Day will be interesting.

Oh and another point, you will need at least a 16 Gig USB, and when you save info, save it onto your hard drive to save filling up the USB. You can always put in another USB or portable hard drive to retrieve your info off your computer's hard drive.

Judgement Day will be interesting.

Sorry, I keep saying USB when I mean flash drive. Sometimes it's called a USB stick here also.

Gazillion .... hmm, sounds a lot more than 12,500 miles or 20,000ks.... (half the circumference of earth). Yep, the stroke of a keyboard, the lens of a web cam and a mic can send stuff around the world in a split second. Makes friends of people in other countries, and isolates anyone else in your own home........ Lucky I live alone, I dont ignore anyone near me that way.

Oz is a nice place if you dont mind crocks, snakes, spiders, sharks, box jelly fish, stone fish ..... add infinitum. Just You Toob, "Come to Australia by the Scared Weird Little Guys."

Yes, the world is 25,000 miles around (approx). That's why the furthest distance you can be away from someone is 12,500 miles.
