Are You Being Deceived?

“Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? And in Thy name have cast out devils? And in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: Depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.” Matt. 7:22, 23.

During a recent war a young man left the church and joined the Marines. He was immediately sent overseas on a strategic assignment. For him it was often a matter of life hanging on a very thin thread. The stress and strain of battle was almost unbearable. And then when the strain of battle was over there came long periods of doing nothing. Many of the boys began to drink, and this particular boy was among them. He became such a heavy drinker that he couldn’t stop. Happily, he set himself to study the problem of alcoholism. He read of its psychological aspects, acquired scientific data, and informed himself about all of the different cures. He became an expert on the problems of a heavy drinker. He even helped several of his buddies get back on their feet. But he himself remained an alcoholic.
In a way, life is a matter of having the proper balance and perspective. Salvation is likewise. There are many Christians who ‘know and do not.’ Others ‘do’ and produce with zeal–even in excess. But they do so in forced conflict and from a sense of arbitrary duty. Both categories are deceived, because they always circumvent the core of truth and never hit the actual center. God wants His to know and to do with discipline. He also wants them to serve Him with free-flowing love and not from a sense of calculated devotion that remains selfish in its ultimate goal. There can be the zeal and labor of a zealot or a social worker, but Christ will profess, “I never knew you.”

Truth and works are not ultimates. With the “spark of love” they move into focus, and the possessors “receive power” and become witnesses. (Acts 1:

We are told to “Let your light shine”. It doesn’t say “make your light shine.” That means that when we have the love of Jesus dwelling within us we will let it spill out and over those around us. It will not be out of a sense of duty that we serve Him, but love will be the motivating factor.

God loves YOU!

May the Lord bless you and keep you
