I should point out that the ACLU is backing the Amish...imagine that.

The Amish want to use lanterns as their only visible protective signal. The laws have been revised on their behalf requiring them to use reflective tape and red battery operated lights. But batteries are a form of electricity. Although they don't publish this, they use generators on occasion and also work for normal business who use electricity and shop in electrified stores...all with all the same technology we all use.

Also, almost daily you can find kids less than 3 and 4 feet tall walking to school or somewhere along side the road barefoot in cold rainy weather with 18 wheelers, tractors, and cars zipping within a couple of feet of them. We have an ample supply of snakes, possums, racoons, stray dogs, pet dogs, cats, coyotees, etc....and yet these kids are making their way unattended among these hazards....not to mention road litter such as cans and broken glass.

Maybe someone should build an buggy lane... like a specially marked Bike Lane or Path.

It sounds quite dangerous to me. I can understand your
concerns.

hello OC...and yes, that is also something that I have considered. Part of the problem with that idea is that although they are somewhat 'regional' they are still scattered and thus using quite a few roads. That idea would be very expensive and they would not be the ones to pay for something like that even though it would be for them almost exclusively.
What I suggested above would actually take advantage of the fact that the roads are already in existence. It would just require some to sell and relocate...and some minor changes in their practices.

Some one will eventually get hurt or killed here. It has happened in other parts of the country already. Every day, nearly, I come upon one with little kids peeking out the back or side. They have no idea how much danger they are in.
For this to be allowed to happen in order that someone can maintain a false interpretation of the scriptures is just wrong.

Many times they will state their belief that they trust God to care for them. Well, maybe. I do not know exactly to what extent that God cares for people. But I do think that One of the ways is by giving us a brain and the wherewithal to use it.

hello Foraseason..yes, it is. Thanks for commenting.

I think one thing we should note here is that the political stance isn't helping. And that they can't...in their on minds...because they have to avoid the 'religious' bent that has developed over the years.

I would have said that the laws should govern, but it seems the laws have been amended for them. I trust the laws for the general public are that it's illegal to drive without your headlights on after dark. Sensible would be them avoiding the public roads after dark. If they can't do that, the onus should be on them to be visible.

hello longing....yes, the laws have been adjusted for them and I am quite certain there has been a lot of looking the other way as well.
But a few tickets have been given and they are now claiming religious whatever....essentially being above the law or excluded from it.

They're claiming that the law goes against their beliefs? I kind of get that, but they're still endangering lives. It would be different if it only affected them.
