Cats!! What are they good for?

What is the point of owning a cat? This is not an anti-cat post - I genuinely want to know the answer.

I have never owned a cat or a dog. I quite like dogs, or to be more accurate I like other people's dogs. I don't think I could be bothered to do all that is necessary to look after one properly. But I can see what people get from owning a dog - companionship, loyalty, perhaps a feeling of security if it's a big dog!

But cats? They spend all day wandering off on their own business, come back to get fed, then clear off again. So what is the point of having one?

And another point. My niece, who owns 3 cats, says "You don't own a cat, a cat owns you". If this is true then surely a Christian shouldn't have a cat at all, since "no man can serve two masters" {and our master is God}.

Anyone like to correct my ignorance?

Peter

Well Peter having cats all my life, I guess its the responsibility of looking after them. Yes they are an independant animal but they are loving (on their terms), great to cuddle (on their terms), and to pat their fur. But mostly they give me a sense of calmness, love and company. My big ginger moggy has such a personality... Mainly I enjoy them... Truly Sue

My cats are quite loving toward me. They don't wander off and "do their own thing." My cats live indoors, never going outside. That's because I don't want them to get hurt. Cats can be aloof at times, but they are also quite loyal.
When I come home both my cats greet me at the door. My Siamese has a sense of humor. He likes to tease by hiding and attacking my legs while I'm walking through the house! Then he will jump on me and rub his head on my chin and purr like crazy. My other cat fetches. She has a favorite little toy that I throw down the hallway and she brings it back over and over again!
The statement "A cat owns you" simply means that cats can be possessive of their owners and it also refers to all that we do for them. At least, that's how it is with mine. Yes, there is some work involved, like cleaning out the litterbox, but it's no worse than changing diapers!
I find them to be wonderful companions. My cats enjoy being stroked and brushed. It's a game to them. My Siamese likes to jump on my lap when I'm typing and try his hand (paw) at it. Of course, he can't spell worth beans!!
I'm sorry that you don't "get" the point of having a cat. I guess it all depends on how you raise them, too. As I said, my stay indoors. I suppose an outdoor cat would behave differently. I've had outdoor cats that have been hit by cars, poisoned, stolen, etc. They generally don't live very long. The life span of a cat can be anywhere from 15 to 20 years. My last two cats lived 17 years and 18 years. The two I have now are 4 years and 1 1/2 years. I have a long way to go with these two as long as they remain healthy. Regular checkups, shots, and neutering will keep them around for a long time.
Hope this helps, Peter! God bless!

I have had a cat; my mom had a cat; I love cats! Oh, one can do a lot with cats too, provided you get good contact with them from youngest age.
Dogs are too "fidgety" for me, LOL! And then you have to curb them... and most stink when they get older! eeewww!! But certainly a must have when you live in the country!

Btw, one gets very attached to cats too, and one becomes a slave (loses one's freedom) even to dogs when one has to travel and stay away too often!

How to choose a cat? Let them choose you! hahahaaaa!!! It works!

Hi Peter,
Personally i`m not a cat person coz i don`t like the fact that the ones that do go outside bring back "little presents for the owner ". My sister has had cat after cat since she left home n at times they bring back half dead rabbits, birds, mice etc.She would end up with with a trail of carcasses that the cat would play with then kill and eat. I couldn`t stomach that in my house.Mind you at times she`d have to get the poor half dead whatever it was and give it a quicker end then put it in the bin.Yuk.
As you know i`m a dog person. I just love em. None of my dogs in the past or now bring livestock of any form back home. My present dog Zac does however eat rabbits when we`re out but well away from me.
God Bless,
Wendy

Show me the way Sweet JESUS.
Lead and i Will follow.

I can't correct you!!! I think you have to be either a cat lover or you're not. I am not. I love kittens....but cats....no. I'm allergic to them anyhow so having one in the house is a no-no. Having outdoor cats on a farm (as I grew up) they kept away a lot of critters like mice, snakes, and things like that. I prefer a dog, too....but only the non-shedding ones!!! Geeeeeeee, I'm so picky!!!!

Hi Peter ,

I've never had any pets either - too tying. My lifestyle
has been quite nomadic, so a pet would be impossible.
But, like yourself, I much prefer dogs. In fact I always
loved being around my sister's and neighbours dogs.
Lively, fun creatures. Seem to 'give a lot back'.

Cats do just seem to do their own thing!! I don't dislike
them, but I'm not 'into' them either. I tend to avoid them
because I'm very allergic to the spores etc. in their fur.

GBY,
Pat

When was slavery ended?

Dogs are just animal slaves, too stupid to know they have been emancipated.

As long as God come first and foremost, why can not the cat own the human physical part of you?

I am sure a mate would understand that they would have to share you with the cat.

How you raise a child will determine the outcome of the child, thus so to with the cat.

Raise them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Sorry but I could not resist the post.

Nor making a comment.

Sorry for the distraction.

The cat made me do it.

Honest !!!

Saying I am sorry is WORTHLESS without real repentance.

True or FALSE ?

Without a personal and intimate relationship with God, how can you ever realize the true identity and person of God?

Continue to be faithful, deliverance is near, obedience must be seen, be an unconditional blessing as He continues to bless you.

This time is short, serve Him well, serving all.

Without exception.

Ooooh, them's fighting words..."dogs are too stupid to know they have been emancipated." !!! What!!! They are just loyal...and love you for more than just what you feed them. And they, at least the breed I have had (Keeshonds), are very intelligent...once I could not find one of my shoes... I said, "Gracie, I can't find my shoe." She looked around the room and then spied it behind the Christmas tree, walked over to it, put her paw on it, then looked at me, then the shoe, to show me where it was. I did not teach her that, she just came to learn a lot of things like that on her own. She also taught me to be a better driver. If I was following too close or driving too fast (yes, I confess) she would come up between the 2 front seats and pull on my arm with her paw. She would not stop until I slowed down. Can your cat do that? I bet not!!!

Thanks for your comments everybody. I think you all realised that my post was partly tongue-in-cheek but I have learned a few things I didn't know before. Just a couple of specific responses:

To Interpretation: looks like we're on the same wavelength on this one! Yes, it was the song "War" that I had in mind when I chose the title, and the answer you gave to the question was also the one I had in mind!

To meow33744: This wasn't aimed at you of course, and I think you realised that as your reply was partly tongue in cheek too.

The only pets that we had as I was growing up were budgies! The ones we had were more fun than EITHER a cat OR a dog. Memories of having to rearrange the Monopoly money after it had been blown all over the place by a perishing bird! {Maybe cats are good for something after all!}

Blessings to all
Peter

Oh and did I mention my dog sometimes take over the driving when I'm tired...and climbs the ladder and helps me hang the lights at Christmas!

Okay right after I posted that last comment I let my dog out in the backyard...she ran out into the yard and I saw a very large snake jump up from the grass right underneath her! She ran right across it....couldn't see what kind; it was in the bushes by the time I got out there. She seems fine, so don't think she was bitten. But maybe I should confess that the last comment was a bit of a stretch?

I ADORE them!!!

Cats are such wonderful pets to have..though its true, they are a mind of their own, and yes 'they own us'..however, they are still a beautiful pet to cuddle and great company as one sits at the desk to write (Beattrix Potter comes to mind)

Its ok Peter, if there comes a time to own one, then you'll understand ..oh and budgies are great pets also, mine always talked, we had to watch 'everything' we said as one particular clever boy you could almost have a conversation with he knew so many words and sentences!

Everyone says my cats are content.

One day I had placed clothing on hangers on the door to the bathroom, and then proceeded into the tub for a nice luxurious bath. To my dismay, the cat I allowed to remain in the bathroom with me perched himself on a shelf and eyed the clothing on the door. Then he took this great big giant leap with all fours, reaching for something to grab a hold of. He then hung on for about a minute, with his claws securely anchored into the clothing, searched around him and enjoying the view, and finally released his claws and dropped to the floor.

What are cats good for? Periodically raising your blood pressure.
