How CAN people say there is no God?

On Sunday evening I was walking home very late {about 11:30pm} when I was treated to an awesome and absolutely amazing sight.

It was a full moon that night and the moon was VERY bright, like an enormous searchlight above the clouds. Also, it was positioned just above a medium sized gap in the clouds. The effect was to light up the clouds and a large part of the sky in such a way that the sight was beautiful and awe inspiring. I was reminded of two scriptures:

Psalm 19 v 1
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands"

Romans 1 v 20
"Since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse"

I found myself thinking 'HOW can people say that there is no God when sights like that are available?' There is a scripture somewhere about people being 'willingly ignorant' but I can't remember where it is - does anybody know?

Walking home last Sunday night there were some places where the brilliant moon itself was hidden behind buildings, but I could still see the effect of its light on the sky. In a way this was EVEN MORE AWESOME than when I could see the moon, but it does lead to another couple of thoughts:

1. Although we cannot see God, we CAN see the result of his work in creation.

2. Another scripture I can't locate for the moment is 'no-one can see God and live' - but even what we CAN see at times is awesome enough!

Hiyas Peter!!

I really loved reading this .. that scripture you were looking for is in 2 Peter (of all places hahaha) .. it's actually a duelism - as He's shown it to me anyways lol -

I am so with you .. I for the life of me, cannot understand ANYONE who says 'there is no God' .. it really boggles my mind and they will fight tooth and nail to prove what they say .. I feel sorry for them, they will never know until it is too late, the glory of our Beloved Creator!!

I can't believe I couldn't remember it's from 2 Peter 3 v 3-7, which is one of the key scriptures for us Young Earth Creationists! Thanks for commenting - those who deny the Creator to the end will sadly find that "they have no excuse" as Paul says, which is the biggest motivation to evangelism I can think of.

Blessings
Peter

This is my 667th post on the blogs, although by the time anyone reads it my "post count" will have gone higher than that.

I didn't want my "post count" to stay on 666 so I thought I would just find something to say however trivial!

Amen! Living in Beautiful British Columbia Psalm 19:1 is so often on my lips! HE is so evident in His creation.

If you find the verse about the willfully ignorant I would very much appreciate knowing the reference. I worked with a people group who built a theology around the verse which says in effect that 'him who knoweth much much will be expected.' (which I also can't locate at the moment.) But they purposely choose not to know much (not only theologically but in the world in general) based on a warped interpretation of that verse. The effects of this are evident in their whole community.

(lol, on the 666 comment)

Hi Hellen. I think the verse is 2 Peter 3v5 but in the NIV it says "deliberately forget" which I guess means the same thing. I can't find the other one you mentioned - I thought it was the parable of the talents but that says "to everyone who has, more will be given" which isn't quite the same! If I come across it I'll let you know.

Thanks, Peter. I know I had the verse marked in my Bible because in Mexico it was one of the significant ones to teach on in context, but I can't seem to find it right now. But I'm thinking that Luke 12:48a is part of where they got the idea from, "but the one who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging will receive but a few..." Most of those idividuals all illiterate (by decree of their 'spiritual' leaders) and so listen only to these leaders quote various things, these leaders themselves often barely able to read and just reiterating what the leaders before them taught. And just as in Martin Luther's fight, these leaders hold their forefathers spoken words as higher than what the actual word of God says.

Anyhow, thanks for the reference above.

Hellen if you read on to Luke 12v48b you will find that IS the verse! "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked" {NIV}
