WE ARE NOT WORTHLESS!!

If you are trying to sell your house and someone makes you an offer for it that is less than you think it is worth, you will reject the offer because you will think "the value of my house is more than that". But is it? Surely your house is only worth what you value it at if someone is willing to pay that price! It is the fact that someone is willing to pay the price you are asking that invests the house with its value.

If you own a car that is exactly what you have always wanted, and there is a bad accident, your insurance company may decide it is beyond economical repair {"worthless"} and simply offer you in monetary terms what they think it WAS worth. Nevertheless, you may love that car so much that TO YOU it is worth ANY price to have it repaired. If it is mechanically safe to do so it may be possible to buy the wreckage back and lovingly repair and restore it AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE.

The human race was CREATED BY GOD and God also placed within us HIS OWN IMAGE. After we had been created to complete the creation we read:

"God saw all that he had made, and it was VERY GOOD" {Genesis 1 v 31}

After we had given in to Satan's temptation and become sinners and corrupt in our nature with wicked and deceitful hearts, what was God's response? Did he abandon us to our fate as the car owner who didn't really care would have done after the write-off accident? Did he decide the cost of rescuing and restoring us was too much? NOT A BIT OF IT! Read this:

Romans 5 v 8:
"God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us"

The above verse tells us two apparently contradictory things:

1. Christ died for us NOT because our goodness meant we deserved it, but despite the fact that our sinful nature deserved only condemnation.

2. God loved us enough to send his son to make possible our salvation and the restoration to what was originally intended {and beyond}.

So although we have NO PERSONAL VALUE OF OURSELVES, the fact that God decided to pay the required price to 'get us back' INVESTS US WITH VALUE. The reason for his decision is ultimately known only to him but the only clue we have is the statement in Genesis that he placed HIS OWN IMAGE within us and that he regarded the finished creation {including us} as VERY GOOD.

Here are some more Bible verses that add to our understanding of this issue:

John 3 v 16:
"God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life"

Mark 10 v 45:
"Even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Matthew 10 v 31:
"You are WORTH MORE than many sparrows"

Luke 12 v 24:
"How much MORE VALUABLE you are than birds"

They got it backwards…….

which gives a fresh perspective on a well known parable. You will see that I myself did not agree with it at first but became convinced that the blogger was correct. This adds the final touch to my comments.

Oh wow - I read the other post as well. How sad that there are those who were taught the doctrine of worthlessness!! We are that pearl, that chosen one! Yes, we also 'give up' our lives to Christ - but not in a negative way! The whole Gospel is a joyful, willing acceptance of the wonderful free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. We are his cherished, beloved children who he seeks and draws back to himself if we are willing. Thank you for posting this to encourage those who are still caught in the web of negativism and worthlessness.

Hi Susan. Thanks for your comment and I agree totally. I see this whole issue as one of balance. There are those who would twist the truth and preach a cross-less gospel, which is of course no gospel at all! This leads to a self-indulgent Christianity. On the other hand there are those who emphasise the sinfulness of man {which is undoubtedly a fact} and miss the whole point of why God bothered to send Jesus at all. This leads to the 'web of negativism and worthlessness' that you mention which I know all about because I have spent much of my Christian life there! We need to hold my points 1 and 2 in balance at all times. God bless. Peter

"So although we have NO PERSONAL VALUE OF OURSELVES, the fact that God decided to pay the required price to 'get us back' INVESTS US WITH VALUE."

I disagree with that part.

One soul is of infinite value; for Calvary speaks its worth.

thats more like it.

and thats why its foolish to allow Satan to entice us into sin..

"What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Matthew 16:26.

Jn:14:15: If ye love me, keep my commandments. --Jesus.

Hi Claudia. I agree that our soul IS of infinite value, but ONLY because God has stamped his own image on it. The value has nothing to do with what we now are without Christ. Calvary indeed shows us the value God places on it, and thanks for the verse you quoted which shows how much value WE should put on our own soul.

Ditto to what Susan says here. The culture that I worked in in Mexico is very very tied into the 'worm theology' and the destructiveness of that way of thinking was evident everywhere. So many stay at the cross 'dying and dying and dying to self' but never live in that wonderful resurrection power nor do they learn to see themselves as Christ sees them. Very Sad.

Thanks for this post, Noah.

Thanks for your comment Hellen. Again it's balance - the faith is based on BOTH the cross AND the resurrection. We can't have the resurrection without first having the cross, but if we stop at the cross and never get to the resurrection how sad is that!

Hi Noah/Peter...thank you for this post...I really enjoyed it as it gave me much food for thought through some of the aspects arising...
Everything that God created is good...and we are indeed made in His image...to have fellowship with Him etc...
When sin prevailed through Adam...mankind ended up with a fallen nature...death and decay is everywhere...for the wages of SIN is DEATH...of ourselves we have nothing good... we are not worthy of anything and all our righteous acts are as filthy rags before a holy God...Is.64:6
But because He loves us so much, we are not worthless and we are of value to God...He bought us back at a price, the death of His own Son, Jesus Christ, Lamb of God... the perfect sacrifice for the atonement of our sins...His blood shed for us on the cross!
Christ has conquered death too in His resurrection power...we now have eternal life and life abundance...and the VICTORY too over SIN and death in our lives...in HIM.
We are worthwhile(not worthless), precious and much beloved of God indeed..."Thank You Father God for Your salvation plan in Your Son Jesus Christ for us" Amen.

Man can make many plans...BUT it is the Lord who will direct his paths....

Thanks for your comment. You seem to agree with me on the two key points - we are NOT worthy of our salvation but God has paid a price which proves we ARE valuable in his sight. Who are we to argue with HIM?

Blessings.
