Perhaps it would help to break things down so that we can come to a deeper, clearer understanding.
There does exist a sort of perfectionism that is unhealthy. To obsess over trying to do every act perfectly regardless of whether it involves sinning or not like cooking, playing sports etc is unhealthy perfectionism.
But in regards to sin and living holy sanctified lives, the question is then.... perfectionism through what means? My own? or through Christ?

If it is to lead a victorious life over sin through Christ, than that is not unhealthy. How can it be? If I want to be perfect, free from sin through my own efforts....I'm doomed. If I want to be perfect free from sin by clinging to my Savior, wouldn't that please the heart of God who wants His children to hate sin as He hates it?

In secular matters perfectionism is detrimental. Paralyzing.
In spiritual matters perfectionism and Biblical Perfection are really the same because perfectionism has to do with making something (in this case the character) perfect. The true follower of Christ is he or she that understands that this Biblical Perfection or perfectionism can only be attained through continued surrrender to Christ. If I try to achieve perfection through my own means, then I will never achieve it.

Will heaven be only for those who after having received Christ never sinned afterward, not even once? If that is the case, heaven will be a lot emptier than what most of us ever conceived. Or will heaven be for those who continually surrender to Christ to overcome sin, and if they fell, they called out to their Redeemer, were picked up and so proceeded once more toward the goal. And as their life progressed provided they continued in their walk with the Lord, the image of Christ became ever so clearer until the very end.
Perhaps when the Bible talks about perfection it is not a life history that is absolutely error and sin-free from birth to death for that was only achieved by one, our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Perhaps when Christ said BE Perfect he was telling us reach maturity and completeness in Him, to wash ourselves daily in His blood from any sin we might committ, but to cling for Him for dear life so that we may not sin, but if we do He is our advocate. Just as a branch on the vine, although "imperfect" in comparison with the "perfect" fruit of Eden, can reach maturity and bear amazing fruit. So we "imperfect" beings, through Christ can reach a "perfect" character that is complete mature and fruitful for His glory. Christ perfect life can be reproduced in man as he learns to walk with Him day to day. It is possible because we can do all things in Christ who gives us strength. Like Paul may we strive each day not in our own strength but in the Lord's to reach the fullness of the perfect Son of God.

God Bless,

Great post... I most times want to know what sin people are choosing or do they try to act like they just had an accident and fell into one.. I have been jotting down a few thoughts of that since last I was here in my drafts.. but not sure many wish to ever think they are making a choice of sins.. maybe on a daily basis. Shoot, could be a lot are perfect, but at times I doubt it.. LOL OH but then, I am not sure I am really up to date on the latest improved revised version of the sin list.. I am hopping to see some post it here soon so I know for sure. I am betting Aspartame and refined sugar could be on the really new cool one. Should be if not.. Wonder what prescription drugs were dropped off the old list? So much to wonder on. Great post as I say. thank you.

Great post Phil--I think the problem is Christiasns dont want to spend the time to mature in Christ--ya know you cant keep haivng dirty diapers as a 5-6 yr old lol---there comes apoint in your walk with Christ you must grow up--take some responsiblity for your actions instread of just saying--oops--excuse me God--I didint mean to do that--wel baloney yes you did lol--whether it was DeeDee overeating knowing she will gain weight--heart disease or high cholesterol--many other things from being overweight!! I heard soemthing that was very good yrs ago--and it is this--the blood dosent cleanse excuses--it only cleanses Sin!!!! I have taken responsiblity for my actions in overeating and am now on the right path to optimum health---which will make me abetter witness for him and in better health to complete the race hes called me to complete!!! The church must Mature and lay aside those sins which so easily beset us!! We are called by him and by the empowerment of the HS to be overcomers--but it really is our choice if we want to be it or not!! Ilike another saying I heard--A christian who knows better---KNOWS BETTER !!!!!!

Your welcome rugged.I wanted to share this without pointing a finger at anybody.At the end of the day it's how we really see ourselves and allowing God to mold us into His likeness.I have seen a good number of TRUE CHRISTLIKE individuals here that are sowing love and are not discord.I personally have a lot of growing to do in my spiritual walk,there's always room for improvement,that is if I'm willing to let it happen.I'm not there yet, Vern.

May God continue to bless you, as you search to know Him better.

God did say..we will be destroyed by our lack of knowledge.
Wisdom is priceless treasure.Don't be to hard on yourself girl,
we all have some kind of struggle,whether it is overeating,drinking,smoking,spending too much time doing things that we love and not spending enough time with God...I used to love my food a bit too much as well,only woke up when nothing fitted me.I loved my cakes..Overeating is a sin (to me anyway).Your too right by saying the blood doesn't cleanse excuses.When we're weak we tend to make all sorts of excuses lol.Why do we make an excuse..??..We know we made booboo....When we fully surrender, moment by moment that's when we are strong,and the HS can dwell in us.
Blessing to you.

Hi, philo,
You have put a question that "perfectionism through what means? My own? or through Christ?" in your 1st Para.
Here I give my understanding from the word of God. My answer is that through Christ, by his word and Spirit.

By the Blood of Jesus Christ we get 1)Redemption and 2) Sanctification.
redemption occurs Once only on the moment we are Born Again, where as the sanctification is the Continuous process of work of the Holy spirit to lead a believer into 'Perfection' to meet Christ in His Second coming.

The Life of a believer is a constant warfare between Flesh and Spirit. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would(Ga:5:17).

Further Paul also said in "Rom:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

Rom:20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me".

Though we are Born again the Old Sin Nature of our body will again and again tempt us to covet for Sinning. Therefore, to Lead a Victorious Sinless life and to get Perfectionism, we not only to surrender to Christ , but also we need to be under the sprinkling blood of Christ for our sanctification always , (1 John 1:9) by examining ourselves individually daily; and also as you mentioned in the last para of your post.

If We try to achieve perfection through my own means, then we will never achieve it.

May God Bless

Hi Marianne;

I haven't been blogging as much lately because I now share my internet with some neighbors who are frequently downloading, which slows up my connection to where I almost can not navigate on the internet. I found your usage of the word 'perfect' interesting, and in the context you were referring to, I found the following Greek word, and it's meaning.

teleios tel'-i-os - complete (in various applications of labor, growth, mental and moral character, etc.); completeness: - of full age, man, perfect.

Which reminded me of another usage of the word 'perfect';

artios ar'-tee-os - complete: - perfect.

and it's derivative.

exartizō ex-ar-tid'-zo - a derivative of artios; to finish out (time); figuratively to equip fully (a teacher): - accomplish, thoroughly furnish. Here is the Scripture where artios, and exartizo appear which I will highlight.

2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Isaiah 66:2b; But to this one I will look, To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.
